Sweet Potato Nutrition & Smoothie Recipes

Sweet potatoes are considered healthy for several reasons:

  1. Nutrient-Rich: They are packed with essential nutrients like vitamins A, C, and B6, as well as minerals like potassium and manganese. These nutrients play various roles in supporting overall health, including immune function, vision, and brain health.
  2. High in Fiber: Sweet potatoes are a good source of dietary fiber, which is beneficial for digestive health. Fiber helps regulate bowel movements, prevents constipation, and may lower the risk of colon cancer.
  3. Low Glycemic Index: Despite their sweetness, sweet potatoes have a lower glycemic index compared to regular potatoes. This means they cause a slower and steadier increase in blood sugar levels, which can help manage blood sugar levels, making them a suitable option for individuals with diabetes or those looking to control their blood sugar.
  4. Antioxidant Properties: Sweet potatoes contain various antioxidants, such as beta-carotene (which gives them their vibrant orange color), anthocyanins, and other polyphenols. These compounds help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, reducing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and inflammation-related conditions.
  5. Heart Health: The potassium content in sweet potatoes helps regulate blood pressure by counteracting the effects of sodium and supporting proper fluid balance in the body. Additionally, the fiber and antioxidants in sweet potatoes contribute to heart health by reducing cholesterol levels and inflammation.

I LOVE Sweet Potato Smoothies but my other favorite ways to eat them is with a little olive oil and salt then add to baking sheet. You can also add white potatoes, onions, peppers, chickpeas and add these to a grain bowl (brown rice, quinoa, millet) and add your favorite greens, fresh veggies and dressing. So good!
